Dogs are part of the family, so it is only natural that you want a dog friendly holiday, and for them to be welcome too. Our blog gives you some ideas of where to holiday in the UK and what sort of holidays are out there for you.

Dog Holidays in the Lake District

Flo enjoying the dog friendly Lake DistrictLets face it.  Dogs love the Lake District.  Whether it’s rainy or sunny they just can’t get enough of it.  It’s a vast playground just waiting to be explored.  In fact there are 885 square miles to discover, as well an additional 1728 square miles if you include Cumbria as a whole – and you should, the Eden Valley is beautiful yet lays outside of the Lake District National Park.

The Lake District, of course, is known for its lakes and mountains, and is home to England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike.  If, however, you would like to take your dog on a trip where he can run free away from all the trappings of human civilisation, then Ennerdale is the Lake District’s most isolated valley with people few and far between.   The neighbouring valleys of Wasdale and Eskdale also offer freedom and space to get away from any crowds.

TedEven off the fells, dogs are welcomed around the Lake District.  If you’ve walked too far and need to take a bus or a taxi home, most will be happy to take the dog too.  Even the Ravenglass and Eskdale steam railway has special dog tickets if you fancy taking your dog on a trip, and Derwentwater Launch will take dogs on a boat trip for free!

Once back from your walk there are plenty of pubs who will encourage your dog to lie in front of the fire while you tuck into a pint of Cumbrian ale accompanied by pie and chips, and many of the shops allow dogs to come and browse with their owners.

Keswick was recently named by the Kennel Club as the most Dog Friendly Town 2012, and rightly so. Kaz Graham came to Keswick to look into this for Radio 4’s ‘You and Yours’ ( – 20 mins into the programme).  She popped into the office of Sally’s Cottages to chat to Sally and find out what they do.

We have 44 pet friendly cottages in Keswick and over 150 pet-friendly cottages throughout Cumbria.  We positively encourage our cottage owners to accept dogs of all shapes and sizes and love it when we get sent pictures on Facebook of dogs enjoying their holidays.”
